Living a Purpose-Filled Life
Oneof the main concerns I’ve heard during my twenty five years of working withclients and especially when I had the privilege of talking with elderlypeople atthe end of their life, was whether or not they fulfilled their life’s purpose.
I would ask them what they thought theirpurpose was. I reminded them that not everyone was going to be an Oprah Winfrey,Deepak Chopra, orChloe Faith Wordsworth-developer of Resonance Repatterning®,and thattheirpurpose was very uniqueto them. They did not have to be famous or up onstage, have books and CD’sout, be wealthy, married, or whatever they thought and believed might be aworthy purpose.
Iwould have them do what I call a life review. Starting in childhood, I wouldhave them name all their accomplishments as well the qualities theyembraced asthey influenced all the people in their lives. From this inquiry, they woulddiscover on their own, the theme, consistent quality, or way of beingthatreally made a difference for them and the people who they positively affectedboth personally and professionally. Some of them commented that theywereloving, patient, generous, understanding, compassionate, and/or kindhearted.Others said, “I was a good mother–helpful and supportive.” or “I was agoodfather–generous and a good provider.” As you can imagine, the list went on andon. I then helped them see that what they accomplished in their livesand thequalities they exudedwastheir lifepurpose and that it was enough. Beinga loving mother was enough. Being a good provider was enough. Taking a standfor peace and being peaceful was enough. Being lighthearted, humorous, andoptimistic was enough! Knowing this opened their hearts, anda sense of peaceand calm came over them.It actuallybrought them to tears–tears of knowing that they indeed did fulfill theirpurpose and lived a purpose-filled life!
Iwould not recommend waiting until the end ofyourprecious life to discover your life’s purpose. Sit down whenyou have uninterrupted time. Light acandle if you wish. Fill the room withyour favorite scent. Close your eyes, take some slow deep breaths and do yourown life review. Start when you were achild. What qualities or attributes didyou radiate back then? Then continue by listing your accomplishments as anadult and use them to determine thequalities you’ve used to make a differencein those around you. You will be amazed at what you discover. Keep breathing. Keepwriting. You will see a themeemerge. Now, go into the quiet of your inneressence and allow yourself to claim your life’s purpose. You may even experiencethat you are already living apurpose-filled life!
